Month of December — Favorite Book of 2017

Help with our year-end countdown of the best books of the year. Check out the selections on the slatboard beside the adult computers. Pick your favorite book from the top 16 most circulated books at the AHRL for 2017. Cast your vote at the Circulation Desk.

Month of December — After-School Fun Time

Both children and teens are invited to stop by Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. to unwind after school. Cards, board games, and coloring sheets will be set up on tables in the Children’s Area.

December 1st – 22nd — Christmas Games

Guessing games and candy canes! Our first Christmas game is to guess the number of ornaments in a jar at the Circulation Desk. Record your guess on an entry form and drop it in the box to enter for a prize drawing. Our second game involves finding all the pictures of candy canes hidden around the library. Mark them on the contest form and return it to the Circulation Desk to receive a candy cane.

Tuesdays in December from 2:00-4:00 p.m. — Writing Center

Do you have writing (fiction or nonfiction) that needs editing and revising? Stop by the Circulation Desk on any Tuesday afternoon and ask for help with short pieces. The Writing Center is located at the tables in the Reference area.

Wednesdays in December at 10:30 a.m. — Story Time!

Stories, music, movement, and crafts are offered for our “littlest” library friends. Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to join the fun. A special holiday visitor will arrive to help spread cheer on December 20th.

Thursday, December 7th, at 6:30 p.m.—Writers’ Workshop

Join our monthly Writers’ Workshop as we brainstorm and write about “Who’s Your Hero?” in the Computer Lab.

Thursday, December 7th, at 6:30 p.m. – Homemade Holiday Craft—Snowflake Glitter Ornaments

Both teens and adults are invited to our first Homemade Holiday Craft session in the Community Room. We’ll make the holidays shine with our snowflake glitter ornaments.

**This program is available at no charge, but space is limited and registration is required. Sign up at the Circulation Desk.

Tuesday, December 12th, at 2:00 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. — S.T.E.A.M. Machine

Children in grades K-5 are invited to participate in this hands-on activity as we make “expanding ornaments” and learn about chemical reactions in both sessions. **No registration is required for either program.

Wednesday, December 13th, at 2:30 p.m.—AHRL Book Club

The Alleghany Highlands Regional Library Book Club will meet in the Community Room to discuss A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Beckman.

Thursday, December 14th, at 6:30 p.m. – Homemade Holiday Craft – Ribbon Tree Ornaments

Both teens and adults are invited to our second Homemade Holiday Craft session of the season as we make Christmas trees out of ribbon. This event will be held in the Community Room.

Tuesday, December 19th, at 6:30 p.m. — LEGO Builders

Children from ages 6-12 are invited to join an AHRL staff member for this hands-on, fun, and educational program.

**No registration is required.

Wednesday, December 20th, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. — Christmas Reception

The AHRL staff invites you to have a snack at the Circulation Desk to celebrate “the most wonderful time of the year.”

Thursday, December 21st, from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. – Kids Make & Take Craft

Children are invited to stop by the Children’s Area to create reindeer mix. **No registration is required.

Saturday, December 23rd, Monday, December 25th, & Tuesday, December 26th

Library CLOSED

The AHRL will be CLOSED on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday for the Christmas holiday.

Wednesday, December 27th, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. — LEGO Free Play

Join the staff and create your own LEGO masterpiece in the Children’s Area. **No registration is required.

Thursday, December 28th, at 2:30 p.m. — Sing-a-long Movie

Watch a Disney movie in the Community Room and sing along with your favorite songs from Frozen.

Saturday, December 30th – Monday, January 1st — Library CLOSED

The AHRL will be CLOSED on Saturday and Monday for New Year.
