The goal of this program is to help children prepare for kindergarten by completing 1,000 fun, engaging, everyday activities such as reading, music, exercise and games. Research shows that these interactions between children and adults in their world help provide the background they need to prepare them for their formal educational journey.
How to Participate
- Visit the library and register your child (birth to 5 years) to participate in this early literacy journey. You will receive a folder with a reading/activity log to track your “Things”. Your folder will include calendars and cards with tips and literacy activity ideas to help you and your child reach your goal.
OR
- Register online. Download and print your first reading/activity log to track your “Things”. You can also download calendars and cards with tips and literacy activity ideas to help you and your child reach your goal.
- START TRACKING! Read a book or do an activity, and after every book read or "Thing" completed with your child, check or fill-in a bubble on your child's log.
- After you finish the first 100 "Things" on the log, come to the library and your child can choose a FREE, brand-new book to KEEP. You will receive the next log, and for each 100 "Things" completed your child will get another book to keep.
- Your goal is to reach 1000 Things Before Kindergarten! This program is self-paced and will take anywhere from a few months to a few years. There is no schedule…just keep going!
- After your child has completed all 1000 "Things," your child will receive a small prize, a certificate, and will be featured in the library's 1000 Things Before Kindergarten Hall of Fame!
